As one of the most exciting and trend-setting cities on the planet, it was only a matter of time before Tokyo hosted its own bellydance competition. The Tokyo International Bellydance Competition will feature guest judges from U.S. are Tamalyn Dallal, Bozenka, and Mira Betz along with three judges from Tokyo, Nenuphar, Maha, and Maki.

In order to accommodate dancers from all over the world, finalist will be chosen by preliminary video submission. The top dancers from each category will be invited to compete in the finals in Tokyo on Sept 21 & 22, 2009. there is no limit to the amount of entries accepted into the competition but there is a deadline for video submission which is on August 1, 2009. Please note that to participate in TIBC 2009, you must first submit a video. There will be no live preliminary round.

Categories :
  • Oriental Solo (22/9) - Professional level solo performance. Finalist will prepare an 8 minutes performance. (Middle East music)
  • Oriental Ensemble (21/9) -Professional level group performance. Groups of 2 to 8 dancers. Finalist will prepare a 6 minutes performance. All members of the group must dance throughout the performance. (Middle East music)
  • Newcomer Solo (22/9) - Dancers with 3 years or less bellydance training. Finalist will prepare a 5 minutes solo performance. (Middle East music)
  • Newcomer Ensemble (21/9) - Dancers with 3 years or less bellydance training. Groups of 2 to 8 dancers. Finalist will prepare a 6 minutes group performance. All members of the group must dance throughout the performance. (Middle East music)
  • Fusion Solo (21/9) - Professional level solo performance. Finalist will prepare an 8 minutes performance. 50% of the dance should be comprised of moves from the bellydance vocabulary.
  • Fusion Ensemble (22/9) - Professional level group performance. Groups of 2 to 8 dancers. Finalist will prepare a 6 minutes performance. 50% of the dance should be comprised of moves from the bellydance vocabulary. All members of the group must dance throughout the performance.

*All performance will be judged on technique, understanding and expression of music, creativity, original choreography, and more.
*Props are optional but should be limited to 2 per performance.
*Finalist will be given more detailed guidelines.

Awards & Prizes

Professional solo and ensemble categories :
  • 1st place 100,000 yen (estimate USD$1,021)
  • 2nd place 50,000 yen (estimate USD$510)
  • 3rd place 25,000 yen (estimate USD$255)
Newcomer solo and ensemble categories :
  • 1st place 50,000 yen
  • 2nd place 25,000 yen
  • 3rd place 15,000 yen


Additional Judges Pick and People's Choice awards will be given as follows.
  • Tamalyn's Pick - Award given to the dancer with the highest points in the Oriental Solo category.
  • Bozenka's Pick - Award given to the dancer with the highest points in the Newcomer Solo category.
  • Mira's Pick - Award given to the dancer with the highest points in the Fusion Solo category.
  • People's Choice - Awards given to the Newcomer solo and all ensemble categories based on votes by the audience.
